ABOUT STRIDE

“Back in 2011, the first class of STRIDE, or Sodexo Training and Recruitment for Individuals with Disabilities for Employment, students celebrated their graduation from the 20-week program at Lowell General Hospital. Similar to Project SEARCH in our post last week, STRIDE offers on-the-job training for those with intellectual and physical disabilities based on the needs of Sodexo managers at the hospital in food services and housekeeping. However, instead of focusing on high school students, this program is geared toward adults and helping them learn the skills they need to be competitive in the job market upon completion.

STRIDE, which was developed by Sodexo, The PLUS Company and LinkAbilities, continues to operate today, with leadership provided by Sodexo Clinical Nutrition Manager Margaret Wandrey.

“STRIDE is a great experience for the students because we put them through the whole process from start to finish, beginning with an interview and an application,” said Margaret. “Once selected, students participate in three rotations during the program, and the managers at Lowell General push them toward enhancing their comfort in new areas in order to give them the opportunity to explore how they can be successful in the workplace. We’re really trying to give them experiences they can apply to a job.”

Graduates of the STRIDE program have an 86% placement rate out in the community, and some have even been placed at Lowell General.”
